What is a PIR and how do you use it?
The PIR: what you need to know.
If your baggage is damaged at the airport, you will often hear about the PIR (Property Irregularity Report). This document, which is essential for any claim, enables you to report a baggage problem and obtain compensation or a replacement. In this article, we explain everything you need to know about the PIR. Its importance, the steps involved, and the solutions available for damaged baggage.
What is a PIR?
A PIR, or Property Irregularity Report, is an official document issued by airlines or airport baggage departments. It is used to :
- Report damaged, lost or delayed baggage.
- Document damage to your baggage.
- Initiate a claims procedure with the airline.
The PIR contains :
- A unique number consisting of 5 letters and 5 digits (example: CDG12X34YZ).
- A description of the damage (broken suitcase, missing wheels, faulty closure).
- Details of your flight (flight number, date and destination).
Why is the PIR essential for damaged baggage?
It is the basis of any procedure in the event of a problem with your baggage. Without this report :
- No claim can be made against your airline.
- No compensation or replacement can be requested.
- No insurance claims can be made without proof.
The advantages of the PIR for passengers :
- Official proof: It certifies the damage caused to your baggage during the flight.
- Essential for airlines: The refund or replacement procedure only begins once the PIR has been created.
- Useful for insurance companies: You can use the PIR to assert your rights with your travel insurance company.
⚠️ To remember: You must obtain it immediately after noticing the damage, either directly at the airport, or at the Baggage Service or Baggage Claim counter.
How and where to obtain it ?
To issue a PIR, follow these simple steps:
- Go to the Baggage Service counter. At the airport, directional signs will guide you.
- Report the damage to an agent by showing your baggage and your travel documents (boarding pass, baggage tag).
- An agent establishes the PIR: At DIRBY, we use connected tablets to speed up the process.
- Once the PIR has been created, you will receive an email with your PIR number, which is essential for the rest of the process.
Next steps:
Once you have your ticket, proceed as follows /
- Log on to the airline’s website. Look for the section dedicated to baggage claims.
- Enter your PIR number. Follow the instructions to complete your declaration.
- Respect the deadlines. Most airlines require the claim to be submitted within 7 days of the PIR being created.

Specific cases: direct baggage replacement.
Some airlines, such as Turkish Airlines, Corsair or Air Europa, allow you to replace your damaged baggage directly at the airport. This solution is ideal if you want to leave immediately with a new suitcase.
Other airlines require an online procedure. Consult their website or contact their customer service department for more information.
⚠️ Important: Only the airline can provide compensation or replacement. DIRBY will assist you in issuing the PIR, but final decisions depend on the airline’s policies.
